As Liverpool’s defensive injury crisis raged on last season, Jurgen Klopp’s decision to sanction Dejan Lovren’s transfer to Zenit St. Petersburg faced increasing scrutiny.

As Klopp found himself turning to midfielders, initially unfancied centre-backs and emergency signings to solve his crisis, Lovren was enjoying rather better fortunes in Russia.

The centre-back left the Reds in an £11m, having fallen down the pecking order at Anfield, but there can be no denying his experience would have proven vital to Liverpool once they saw Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip all struck down by season-ending injuries.

Lovren wasn’t the only man with Reds links conspicuous by his absence at Wembley on Sunday, with Jordan Henderson only an unused substitute.

But such a revival took time, with Henderson only gaining the recognition he deserves in recent seasons following Klopp’s arrival as manager.

You don’t star in World Cup and Champions League finals if you’re not a good player.

It is a lazy narrative to suggest Lovren only fell down the Liverpool pecking order because of ability.
