Jordan Henderson said that Trent Alexander-Arnold's Liverpool legacy will "live forever" after the right-back confirmed he will leave Anfield at the end of the season.
Alexander-Arnold's future has been the subject of speculation all campaign, ahead of the expiration of his contract in June, and although his next club has not been officially announced, he will join Real Madrid this summer.
Former teammate Henderson, who left Liverpool in 2023, left a supportive message on Alexander-Arnold's farewell Instagram post.
"Everyone knows what the club means to you, and your legacy will live forever.
Alexander-Arnold was one of three key players whose contracts were due to expire at the end of this season, but the England right-back is the only one who is leaving the club as a free agent, after Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah committed to new deals at Anfield last month.
In an interview with club media, Alexander-Arnold was asked to explain why he has taken the decision to leave the club.
"Giving everything day in, day out for 20 years, I’ve got to a point now where I feel like I need a change, a new challenge for me as a player and as a person
And I think now is the right time for me to do that."
Alexander-Arnold claimed that there was, at one point, a "massive possibility" that he would sign a new contract at Anfield, but ultimately he decided against it.
He said: "It’s not about me thinking we’re not going to fight for titles or fight for trophies season in, season out because I knew from the first few moments with the manager that he was a winner, he was aiming to go and win things
I feel like a challenge in a different environment is something I need to do as a player."
