Jordan Henderson and Ajax have let the Eredivisie title slip out of their hands after conceding a 99th-minute equaliser to 10-men Groningen on the penultimate day of the season.

The Dutch heavyweights needed just six points from their final five games to clinch a 37th Dutch title.

But two heavy defeats and two draws, the latest of which came at the hands of Groningen and Thijmen Blokzijl's dramatic equaliser, have put PSV in the driving seat on the final day.



Wout Weghorst restored the visitors' lead and then Luciano Valente was sent off for a foul on Henderson in stoppage time.

As Henderson writhed in pain on the floor, both sets of players launched into a furious brawl and needed to be separated by the referee, before Blokzijl's late dagger dented Ajax's title hopes significantly.

However, despite the extra player advantage, Ajax could not see out three points, conceding in the 99th minute.

They will face a major embarrassment if they lose the title to fierce rivals PSV.

PSV visit Sparta Rotterdam on Sunday, the final day of the season, while Ajax play at home to Twente at the same time.

"It's never easy to speak after conceding a last-minute equaliser," said Ajax boss Francesco Farioli.

Under Ajax's first foreign head coach since 1998, they struggled until December and were third in the table before a run of 13 wins and a draw from 14 games propelled Ajax to pole position in the title race.

Another league title appeared inevitable, requiring just six points from their last five games, but Ajax seemingly were derailed by a 4-0 loss to FC Utrecht.

They then drew with Sparta Rotterdam, before a disastrous 3-0 home loss to NEC prompted further concern, and then the most recent Groningen draw saw the title somehow slip out of their grasp.
