Jorrel Hato has expressed his delight at joining Chelsea, stating it is "the best place" for him after sealing his transfer, despite links to other clubs including Liverpool.

Hato, a product of Ajax's esteemed youth system, had several top European clubs vying for his signature, but he opted for a move to Stamford Bridge, committing to the London club until 2032.

With Chelsea's recent Club World Cup victory featuring central defenders Levi Colwill and Trevoh Chalobah, the arrival of the 19-year-old, who cost the club $46 million, is set to intensify competition at the back.

Speculation over a potential move to Liverpool intensified when Hato was spotted at Anfield during Liverpool's victory over Ipswich in January.

It was understood that Liverpool, who is contemplating bolstering its central defense this summer, was among the interested parties.

However, his appearance on Merseyside was linked to his friendship with Dutch compatriot Ryan Gravenberch, who extended the invitation for Hato to witness the Reds in action.

The two have been teammates in the Netherlands national team, with Hato earning his first senior cap at just 17 and accumulating six caps since.

Hato is the first significant defensive addition, with Enzo Maresca opting to strengthen his attacking line instead.

Joao Pedro was signed from Brighton for $73M (£55m) and played a pivotal role in Chelsea's Club World Cup victory.
