A tribute to Jota and Andre Silva before kickoff(Image: Getty Images)
A moment of silence in honour of Jota and his brother Andre Silva was disgracefuly booed by a minority at Wembley – and Ally McCoist instantly voiced his disgust at the show of disrespect.
Liverpool are at Wembley for the Community Shield with FA Cup winners Crystal Palace and it was their first competitive game since their player Jota died tragically in a car crash last month.
Jota and his brother Silva died in Spain on July 3 and a number of emotional tributes from the world of football and beyond have since followed.
The Premier League champions retired his No.20 shirt and, before the Wembley showpiece, there was a moment of silence in honour of the two former footballers.
But, disgustingly, boos were heard coming from a small minority within the stadium – prompting referee Chris Kavanagh to call the tribute off early.
Supporters from both ends of the stadium reacted angrily after the moment of silence ended and commentator Darren Fletcher quickly addressed it.
He said: "Why on earth there would be a few in the stadium who would spoil that moment is beyond me."
And a clearly sickened McCoist simply replied: "That defies logic, that."
Liverpool quickly opened the scoring within four minutes of kickoff with Hugo Ekitike netting his first goal for the club.
