With Liverpool’s Premier League title now wrapped up, talk is turning towards who will scoop the season’s individual awards.

After such a super campaign, Reds players look set to dominate the running for the Premier League, PFA and FWA Footballer of the Year awards.

Having smashed in 28 goals and registered 18 assists in the Premier League, Mohamed Salah will rightly fancy his chances of scooping the individual gongs once again.

Virgil van Dijk might have something to say about that, though.

The Liverpool captain has been an ever present for the Reds, captaining the team to an unexpected title win.

However, according to journalist Graeme Bailey, neither Salah nor Van Dijk will be his pick for the Football Writer’s Association award.

Speaking exclusively to Rousing The Kop, Bailey explains why he is instead putting a tick by the name of Ryan Gravenberch.

Having begun the season with question marks over his suitability to play the deepest lying role in the Liverpool midfield, Gravenberch ends it having been on the division’s outstanding midfielders.

And according to Bailey, this transformation from bit-part player to undisputed key man has been a big reason for the Dutchman getting his vote.

“I just think he has been a key factor in this team,” says the reporter.

No, he did not hit many 10/10s game, but he was never below a seven or eight [out of 10] for me.”

Should Gravenberch pip Salah and Van Dijk to the award this year, it would perhaps raise a few eyebrows.

As Bailey outlines, however, he would also be a deserving winner.

If the 22-year-old is indeed overlooked, though, Bailey says he would have no issue with either Salah or Van Dijk being crowned as the division’s best player and even throws Alisson Becker into that mix, too.

“Clearly – Virgil and Mo, have been sensational – back to their very best and they have been key pars to this effort – no doubt,” he says.

“I also think Alisson has been outstanding.”

Given the form of Salah in particular, it begs the question of whether Gravenberch’s own outstanding campaign will be overlooked.

With a forward in such sparkling form and topping both goal scoring and assist charts, surely the No.38’s chances of winning are slim?

“I honestly don’t know,” Bailey answered, when asked if Gravenberch could realistically beat Salah to the award.

“To be honest I doubt it.

But I don’t think many people who watch Liverpool would have too many problems if he did win.”

While Liverpool players will rightfully dominate most of the talk leading up to the awards being dished out, there are some other players worthy of consideration.

And according to Bailey, Liverpool transfer target Alexander Isak is likely to be one of those throwing his hat into the ring.

“Liverpool aside – there are a few, Alexander Isak has obviously been sensational – I think Morgan Gibbs-White and Morgan Rogers have been outstanding too,” he said.
