Liverpool are in desperate need of a centre-back and have a long list of options to choose from.

The Reds have been one of the busiest clubs so far this summer but they are not finished just yet.

They may have romped towards the Premier League title, but Arne Slot still has changes that he wants to make, and the centre-back position is the area in which he looks to do just that.

Jarell Quansah is set to join Bayer Leverkusen, Joe Gomez could also depart this summer, and Ibrahima Konate’s future is unclear, highlighting just how big of a problem Liverpool might have.

Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi is a player that has been rumoured to potentially join Slot’s side as the freshest face of their new-look backline, with the Englishman having just one year left on his current contract.

However, although a deal for the 24-year-old is more than plausible, it might prove a tricky one, with journalist James Pearce revealing what this deal actually depends on.

As seen before, Liverpool do not just spend money for the sake of it and when they do, it is probably because they are very sure the player will be a huge success.

That being said, just because Guehi might be available at a slightly cheaper price, the Reds will not rush into anything, with Pearce confirming on The Athletic’s ‘Walk On’ podcast that a deal is very dependent on the competition for his signature.

“Even just a few months ago, Dean Huijsen from Bournemouth ends up going to Real Madrid.

There’s no question that Liverpool would have loved to have signed him,” Pearce said.

“I think that shows you what the preferred profile is, but it doesn’t mean that Liverpool wouldn’t do something different in the right circumstances.

As expected, many clubs are interested in signing the Englishman, and even more have entered the race since the news that he won’t sign a new contract at Selhurst Park.

Arsenal are the main other contender at this point in time, but with Guehi wanting to be first-choice, it seems rather unlikely for him to be offered that at the Emirates next season.

Newcastle were the ones who seemed most likely to get him in the past, but after having a £65m bid rejected for him last summer, it is unclear whether they will go back in for him.

Spurs also had a bid rejected for him in the past, this being a £70m offer just last January, although Liverpool still remain the favourites in the race for his signature.
