Julian Alvarez has already given a hint as to what his intentions are following recent reports linking him with a Premier League return this summer by signing for Liverpool.

The former Manchester City attacker has enjoyed an impressive year since his £82m switch to Atletico Madrid, scoring 29 goals and providing six assists in all competition for the Spanish club in 2024/25.

That is the return Atleti sought for their investment in the forward, but not the outcome Liverpool's rivals hoped for as they have evidently struggled without attacking depth in a campaign the Premier League title has been handed over to Anfield.

Even with that domestic silverware, Darwin Nunez has failed to impress and now Arne Slot is linked with many alternatives, including Alvarez, for the No.9 spot.

Spanish journalist Matias Palacio of El Chiringuito claimed this week that both Liverpool and Arsenal are chasing the forward.

"Meetings will begin next week with several clubs interested in Julián Alvarez," Palacios said.

"Arsenal and Liverpool are very interested in the striker.

"If the offer is higher than what Atlético paid less than a year ago, it will be brought to the club’s board of directors to make the exit possible."

But the Argentine appears to have made his intentions over where he will be playing next season clear already, with a subtle message on social media, with the 25-year-old insinuating that his debut season in Spain is not going to be his last.

"The first season at home is coming to an end," he wrote to Instagram after his team rounded off their campaign last weekend.

Note use of the word 'first', with five more years remaining of the deal he signed at the Wanda Metropolitano only last summer, and his use of 'home' to suggest he is settled.

The caption concluded: "Thank you for always being there and for making me feel like I belong from day one."

If Alvarez is happy at Atleti, the feeling certainly goes both ways as club president Enrique Cerezo ruled out selling his star striker.

"Julian Alvarez is a player of Atletico de Madrid.

He’s very happy here, he is our player and he will remain our player.

"He was raised at Atletico Madrid and he will die at Atletico Madrid," he declared.

Even so, Nunez still remains linked with an Anfield exit in the coming months, and if that were to happen then Liverpool would need to line up a replacement.

At present, they look intent on strengthening their defensive options with Jeremie Frimpong expected to arrive from Bayer Leverkusen for £30m and Bournemouth's Milos Kerkez of interest.

Additionally, attacker Florian Wirtz, of a slightly different profile, is another being closely watched before the player and his camp make a decision over his future.
