Arne Slot is busy spending his way to consolidating Liverpool’s title after Jurgen Klopp’s passionate claims against doing so.

Liverpool have spent big this summer after snatching the Premier League title out of Man City’s hands last season after four years of dominance.

In a bid to be even better next season the Reds have been extremely active in the market, splashing the cash on Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt and Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen.

At the same time, the Merseyside club has been shrewd at offloading some of their unwanted stars, including Caiomhin Kelleher moving to Brentford and Luis Diaz joining Bayern Munich.

Yet, after many years of City dominance largely through hefty spending which previous manager Klopp complained about, are Liverpool now becoming their own worst enemy?

During his tenure at Anfield, the German avidly supported the notion that he would never spend £100million on transfers.

He also was a major critic of the Todd Boehly Chelsea method of spend big or go home highlighting that spending big doesn’t guarantee success.

The Blues board has had the last laugh after a highly-successful 2024-25 season where they won two trophies and secured Champions League football.

In spite of his criticism, is the ex-Borussia Dortmund manager not in complete disgust at the way his old employer is operating in the current transfer market?

According to a report by the Telegraph (8 August), the Reds have now spent close to £300m on new names to bolster their squad next season, the largest spend in the “Big Six”, and should a massive Alexander Isak move come about that number would shoot past £400m.

They have raised significant funds in selling the likes of Diaz and Jarell Quansah, but the alarming rate of investment has prompted Slot to combatively defend their actions.

The Dutchman highlighted that they’ve bought and sold which not every team does, including replacing up top after the tragic loss of Diogo Jota.

He also highlighted that every top-flight side is spending big this season, but after Liverpool fans passionately expressed they would never be like the Cityzens, it appears they are looking more and more like their worst enemies.

I think it is important to remember the low levels of investment Klopp received during his time at Anfield, with the likes of Virgil van Dijk and Alisson arriving for huge fees.

Reds fans hounded the ownership to inject more money into the club, yet PSR reasons and FFP limited how much the side could spend.

All the careful spending in the last few years has now paid off as the Merseyside club are well within reason to go large this summer.

Winning the league title gave them major funds as well as shipping off players whilst they bring in new faces.

Slot himself never mentioned that the club wouldn’t spend big this summer, but after pouncing on a poor campaign by Pep Guardiola’s standards, investing in the long-term will increase their chances of maintaining a domestic dynasty.

Interestingly, the Dutchman’s response indicates that he is aware of the image that the Reds are portraying by spending a huge amount this summer, but the criticism of the current boss’ methods have largely been caused by his predecessor.

Simply put, the ex-Feyenoord manager’s candid nature suggests he is unafraid to own the fact that his side are racking up the millions in purchases.

Still, it is apparent how fans of the club and Klopp are staying rather silent about the spending despite slamming the blue half of Manchester for many years…slight whiff of hypocrisy, no?
