Jurgen Klopp has responded to Trent Alexander-Arnold’s treatment by Liverpool fans.
Klopp will return to Anfield on Sunday less than 12 months since he stood down as manager to witness Arne Slot’s side being presented the Premier League title.
But the former Liverpool manager’s homecoming is being played out against a backdrop of hostility following Alexander-Arnold’s own decision to leave the club.
The England international was openly booed and jeered by supporters as he came on as a substitute during the Reds’ most recent home outing against Arsenal.
Slot refused to condemn fans aggrieved by Alexander-Arnold’s announcement that he will become a free agent this summer, with a move to Real Madrid widely touted.
Klopp installed the homegrown right-back as Liverpool’s new vice-captain ahead of his final season at the helm following James Milner’s departure that summer.
And speaking at the LFC Foundation’s gala ball on Friday, the German took a dim view of Alexander-Arnold’s recent treatment at the hands of his own fanbase.
“I don’t want to tell anyone what they should think,” said Klopp.
“I don’t want to say what you have to think but I can tell you what you think is wrong.
I am an old man and I don’t waste time with hiding my opinion.
“I watched the [Arsenal] game when he came on and I heard the booing.
This is not us, 100 per cent.
“I don’t tell you you should not be disappointed or angry, I tell you ‘Don’t forget’.
This club does not forget.
We are famous for not forgetting.
“We don’t forget anything: we don’t forget the good thing and we don’t forget the bad thing.
But we ignore the bad things and remember the good things.
“You don’t have to be happy he is going but don’t forget what he did for this club because I can’t forget it.”
