Jurgen Klopp has revealed how he turned down an approach to manage the German national side during his time at Liverpool, and could have taken over Bayern Munich after departing the Reds.

The 58-year-old stepped away from his role as Liverpool boss in 2024, when Arne Slot took up the mantle at Anfield, with Klopp opting to leave coaching behind him.

He has admitted he could one day return to the dugout, but is enjoying his current role as the Head of Global Soccer for Red Bull, where he oversees their various sides throughout the globe.

Things could have been different for Klopp and Liverpool, though, had he accepted an offer from the German Football Association in 2023 following the Reds’ underwhelming fifth-place finish in the Premier League.

Instead, Klopp opted to remain on Merseyside for another 12 months, with Julian Nagelsmann taking over the Germany role.

During Klopp’s final year at Liverpool, he managed to oversee the process of refreshing the Reds midfield, something Slot has benefited from.

“I didn’t want to leave,” Klopp continued, when pushed on why he didn’t take the Germany role.

I couldn’t just leave Liverpool like that.

Klopp was back at Anfield for the final game of the 2024/25 season.
