Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp insists that Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino were not dropped against Burnley due to form or fitness concerns.

The two start forwards were left on the bench at Anfield on Monday night, with Sadio Mane joined by Xherdan Shaqiri and Divock Origi in the front three.

With the Premier League champions struggling for goals of late, it was put to Klopp that maybe Salah and Firmino were being dropped due to that or injury problems, but he said otherwise.

‘Neither nor [fitness nor form],’ said the German. ‘It’s just a reaction to the quality in the squad that we have to use.

‘We play every three days, pretty much.

‘Ox [Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain], Shaq and Divock trained well all week, it will be an intense game tonight and we have good options on the bench as well.’

Oxlade-Chamberlain also came into the midfield alongside Thiago Alcantara and Georginio Wijnaldum, while Joel Matip returns from injury to partner Fabinho at centre-back.

Salah and Firmino may not be new injury worries for Klopp, but Jordan Henderson is as he misses the game with a calf problem.

However, the Reds manager confirmed that it is not a serious issue and the England man will not be out for long.

‘Hendo is not in the squad because he felt a little bit, we hope it’s nothing serious, but he couldn’t make it for tonight,’ said Klopp.

Returning from injury on Thursday night was Kostas Tsimikas, the summer signing who is still waiting to make his Premier League debut.

The Greek left-back started on the bench after recovering from a knee injury and will offer competition to Andrew Robertson.
