RB Leipzig are set to step up their interest in Liverpool star Harvey Elliott if Chelsea complete the signing of Xavi Simons.

However, both players do have other options.

If a deal for Simons can be struck, Elliott is said to be Leipzig's top target to replace him with Liverpool valuing the midfielder at around £50m.

A move to Leipzig would see him reunite with former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, who is now Red Bull's head of global soccer.

After leaving Liverpool last summer Klopp admitted his one regret in his final season was not picking Elliott more often, saying: “But if I regret one thing a little bit it’s that Harvey didn’t play often enough maybe.

He was probably our best player, right wing, right midfield, all these kinds of things."

Elliott is a boyhood Liverpool fan and has been reluctant to leave the club, but the 22-year-old has admitted that he may be forced to for the good of his career after making just six starts across all competitions.

"It's just a situation that me and the team have to have a conversation about because I'm coming into an age now where I'm 22, I'm going to be 23 next season," Elliott said when asked about his future while he was away with England at the Under-21 European Championship.

"I don't really want to be wasting years of my career because it's a short career.

But most importantly, it's just about what's best for my career.

"After my injury, I think it was always going to be hard, but I'd hoped I would have got some more opportunities - but football is football."
