Besides, it has not been entirely doom and gloom for the youngster.
Jürgen Klopp used plenty of young players throughout the campaign, but his faith in Elliott was a significant statement of intent and a mark of just how highly the 19-year-old is perceived among Liverpool's coaching staff.
Towards the end of last season, Elliott struggled to get into the team, but he did look sharp in outings for England's U21 side.
For players who have played at least 300 minutes in the Premier League in the Liverpool squad, Elliott averaged the most shot-creating-actions (5.46), per FBref.
But even without a formation change, Elliott's first and primary role at academy level — as well as at Blackburn in the Championship — was on the wing.
The 2022/23 campaign will be a make or break one for Elliott.
