Liverpool’s former director of research has revealed why the Reds opted against signing Alexander Isak in 2022 and instead decided to complete a deal for Darwin Nunez.
Both strikers were on the move three years ago, with Liverpool’s new forward arriving in a record-breaking deal from Benfica, while Isak swapped Real Sociedad for Newcastle United.
Meanwhile, Isak could be priced out of a move away from Newcastle, despite widespread interest in the Swede, with the Magpies reportedly valuing him at a price north of £150million ($206M).

Liverpool is believed to be one of the club’s keen on signing Isak, with the Reds on the lookout for a new no.9 following the struggles of Nunez and Diogo Jota in front of goal.
But it could have been very different had Liverpool plumped for Isak three years ago
“Jurgen created a lot of success for the club, so it’s understandable why it moved in that direction,” Graham told the Financial Times.
“In 2022, he signed Darwin Nunez instead of Alexander Isak
Both players, if you look at top young centre-forwards in Europe, they would be number one and two — or two and three, but [Erling] Haaland was going to [Manchester] City and out of our price range.
“Jurgen preferred Nunez
It would be very churlish of me to say, ‘It’s terrible that Jurgen had his choice’, when in the past Jurgen had been persuaded by me and my colleagues of a different choice.
“And it was still the case that we signed good players — in Nunez’s case, one of the best young strikers in Europe.”
Graham’s influence over transfers saw Liverpool sign Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah, with Klopp known to have preferred the signing of Julian Brandt over the latter.
