Jurgen Klopp has expressed his disappointment after Liverpool’s elimination from the UEFA Europa League by Atalanta.

The Reds’ aspirations of concluding Klopp’s tenure with a European triumph came to an end as they were unable to overturn a first-leg deficit against the Serie A side.

Following a 3-0 defeat at Anfield last Thursday, Liverpool journeyed to Italy, where, despite dominating for large periods, they couldn’t muster the necessary goals and ultimately succumbed 3-1 on aggregate.

Mohamed Salah’s seventh-minute penalty, awarded after a handball from a Trent Alexander-Arnold cross, provided a glimmer of hope.

Towards the end of the first half, Salah squandered a one-on-one opportunity by lofting the ball wide, and Klopp’s side struggled to craft meaningful chances in the second period.

This marks the conclusion of a challenging 12-day period for the Reds, who drew against Manchester United and suffered a home defeat to Crystal Palace, relinquishing their lead at the summit of the Premier League.

With Liverpool now occupying third place, trailing second-placed Arsenal by two points and leaders Manchester City by the same margin, focus shifts back to the title race.

The league campaign stands as their final opportunity to bid farewell to Klopp in fairytale fashion after his eight and a half years on Merseyside, and to supplement their triumph in the Carabao Cup back in February.

He said after the game:  “A bit unlucky, if Trent is a bit fitter can go a bit longer.

We can now focus on the league from right now.

“We created 67 shots in the three games we didn’t win.

We are back to winning ways.

“This tonight was the reaction we needed.

We wished for our people we could have gone to Dublin.

“I loved the way we started the game.

We didn’t lose the game tonight or the tie tonight we lost it at home.

Now we can focus on league, that’s what we will do.”
