Xabi Alonso has announced that he is set to stay at current club, Bayer Leverkusen for at least the next season.
This brought all the rumours which have been circling around Xabi Alonso and Liverpool to a rest.
Because, ever since Jurgen Klopp announced he’d be leaving the club, the Spaniard has been the front-runner for the role.
However, now, it seems as if the Reds will have to turn their thoughts elsewhere as the Spaniard claimed that Bayer Leverkusen was the “right place for him to be.”
“I’m not going to comment about Liverpool or Bayern (Munich).
These are big clubs and I’ve strong links with them but I’m in the place where I want to be.
“It’s not time to decide my future now, I want to develop at Bayer Leverkusen.”
“Last week I had a meeting when I informed [Leverkusen’s directors] of my decision to continue being coach of Bayer Leverkusen.
“At the moment this is the right place for me to develop.”
Although this news is something of a sucker punch to the stomach for Reds’ fans, Jurgen Klopp has shared his thoughts on the news.
Comparing Alonso’s choice to that of his own in the earlier years of his management, Klopp seemingly understood the young managers choice to stay-put rather than take the leap to Liverpool.
“The one part I can speak about is a young manager being at a club where he’s doing really well,” Klopp said via Liverpool.com.
“It’s a similar situation, and I did pretty much the same if you want.
“I never regretted it, so that’s pretty much everything I can say about it.
Xabi’s doing an incredible job there, Leverkusen has a good team, probably will keep the team together.
“I think that’s possible this year as well.
“I understand that he wants to do that
For the other stuff, it’s nothing I have to say to be honest.”
Although many believe the former Liverpool man was ready for the step up, the 2023/24 campaign was the first which Alonso was in charge for a full season.
The Reds will now turn to other options in order to fulfil the managerial role at the club for the 2024/25 season.
Only time will tell which manager is fortunate enough to become the manager of Liverpool.
