It’s been a year since Jurgen Klopp said his emotional goodbye to Liverpool.
But even from afar, the former boss still feels like one of our own.
Klopp is back in the city this weekend.
Not for a new job or big spotlight, but to support something close to his heart — the LFC Foundation.
The club’s official charity has always meant a lot to him, and it’s clear that hasn’t changed since he stepped down.
This week, Klopp returned to Liverpool not just to attend Sunday’s final match at Anfield, but also to take part in the Foundation’s Gala Ball.
It’s his first visit back since last May, and fans will be glad to know he looks as healthy and upbeat as ever.
“He looks super fit, super tanned and looks relaxed,” said Matt Parish, chief executive of the LFC Foundation.
“He always had that connection with the city, he has a connection with people, doesn’t he?”
But Klopp didn’t just show up to smile for cameras.
He made a real difference, the kind of gesture that reminds you why he’s so loved around here.
At the Gala Ball on Friday, it was revealed that Klopp made a personal donation of €100,000 (around £83,900) to the LFC Foundation.
Parish explained how it came about.
“Before he left we were speaking to him about the ambassador role and that he wanted to do something,” he said.
“Then we did an event (An Evening with Jurgen Klopp) with him towards the end of last season and he announced live that he was going to do it at this event.”
After stepping away from management, Klopp was clear about how he wanted to stay involved.
“First thing he said was he doesn’t want his name on the door, ‘I want to do stuff for you, I do want to come back and see games but I want to come back with another purpose as well’,” Parish added.
Klopp also made it clear he didn’t want to rush back too soon.
“He was also conscious he didn’t want to come back too early, so it worked well for us,” Parish said.
“We were initially planning it slightly earlier in the season, and then he said to do it and made a donation of €100,000 himself – it’s massive.”
The Foundation has already used some of the money to support families during the school holidays, a cause Klopp supported during his time as manager.
“He was passionate about that area of work when he was here, so we thought that was the right area to use it for,” Parish added.
At the event, Klopp was his usual self — humble, smiling, and full of warmth.
“I spoke to him (this evening), classic Jurgen and he said ‘How are you?’ He was just chatting,” Parish shared.
Klopp will also be at Anfield on Sunday for the final match of the season, watching from the stands as Arne Slot takes charge of his last game.
Klopp’s legacy at Liverpool was never just about trophies.
It was about heart, people, and the city.
His latest gesture proves that hasn’t changed.
