After Liverpool's limp 6-2 aggregate defeat at the hands of Real Madrid in the Champions League compounded what has been a disappointing season, it appears that the inquest is well underway. The Reds at the round of 16 stage with a whimper following a decidedly toothless defeat out in Spain but, on balance, the damage had already been done at Anfield a month previous as Liverpool shipped five goals after racing into an initial two-goal lead early in the tie. In some ways, given the manner of the defeat, it felt like the end of an era at the final whistle, with the sound of 'You'll Never Walk Alone' blasting over the tannoy at the end of the game only contributing to the film-like end-of-credits feel to proceedings. There is no getting away from the fact that, for an increasing proportion of the members of the side which won the lot under previous seasons, this defeat will have likely been the final act on the European stage in a red shirt. One of the conundrums facing the manager will potentially be whether to persist with at right-back.
