Timo Werner confessed that clinching the Champions League with Chelsea validated his decision to snub Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool.

The German international, currently on loan at Tottenham Hotspur, made a £47.5million switch from Leipzig to the Premier League giants in 2020, despite reported interest from the then-league champions.

Familiar with Werner's prowess in the Bundesliga, the ex-Liverpool boss reportedly wanted to sign the striker during his time at Stuttgart – Werner's boyhood club.

However, the 29-year-old joined Leipzig in 2016 before he was subject to interest from Klopp again, this time during the manager's time at Anfield.

But a deal once again escaped the German duo with Werner opting to join fellow countryman Thomas Tuchel at Stamford Bridge, where he went on to win three major honours, including the 2021 Champions League title.

Despite his success in terms of trophies, Werner's stint in west London saw his overall reputation take a significant hit.

His inconsistency in front of goal and inability to replicate his goalscoring form from his tenure in Germany led Chelsea to part ways with the striker.

The Premier League side eventually sold him back to Leipzig for a reported fee of £25m in 2022 after scoring just 23 goals in 89 appearances across all competitions in England.

During his time at Chelsea, Werner spoke about the opportunity he had to join the Reds but admitted his Champions League victory meant he didn't regret his decision.

During an interview with the Evening Standard, he opened up: "The only thing I can say is they have a German manager.

When I was in Leipzig, I had the possibility to come to the Premier League.

Liverpool were also in my thoughts and were a big possibility for me, but at the end I decided for Chelsea and I won the Champions League title last year.

It was not the worst decision."

The player admitted that Liverpool was a significant option on his radar, yet he ultimately chose Chelsea – a move which led him to Champions League glory last season.

The speedy striker may have been an excellent fit for Klopp's intense pressing game at Liverpool, what with his penetrating runs being an ideal match for their midfield dynamism.

Though, success at Liverpool would not have included the European honour, as their most recent Champions League trophy came back in 2019.

After Liverpool secured their second Premier League crown in five years thanks to their recent resounding 5-1 victory against Spurs, Chelsea will be giving the Reds a guard of honour in their upcoming Sunday clash.
