Everton have been told to pay £40million for Douglas Luiz with Juventus unlikely to accept a loan deal for the Brazilian, sources have told Football Insider.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed what sources have told him about Everton‘s attempts to sign the wantaway midfielder.
Luiz’s £50million move from Aston Villa to Juventus last summer hasn’t gone to plan in the slightest, and the 27-year-old’s desire to leave Turin 12 months on is matched by Juve’s transfer representatives.
The midfielder has been subject to disciplinary action by Juventus this summer after failing to report for pre-season training, but sources have told Football Insider that they’ll still drive a hard bargain for Luiz.
Everton have explored a loan move for Luiz as David Moyes looks to bolster his midfield, but Football Insider sources have said that Juventus are “holding out” for a permanent sale in the region of £40m.
West Ham have also emerged as competitiors for Everton in the race for Luiz’s signature, but it remains to be seen if either club will see that £40m price tag as too expensive and looks for alternative options.

Former Everton CEO Keith Wyness told Football Insider last month that Everton were more likely than West Ham to sign Luiz this summer, but Juventus rigidly sticking to their valuation could cause issues.
Speaking on the new Inside Track, O’Rourke said that a £40m fee on any player could be too big an ask for Everton in their current climate, regardless of both Luiz and Juventus’ willingness for him to leave.
“There’s a willingness from all parties for Douglas Luiz to leave Juventus”, he told Football Insider.
“He missed the first few days of pre-season without the club’s consent – there’s talks ongoing between Juve and his representatives to try and sort out an exit.
“The move to Juventus just hasn’t worked out for the Brazilian.
The problem for any of these interested clubs and Luiz is that Juve would prefer a permanent sale, rather than a loan deal.
“Everton initially would like to sign Douglas Luiz on loan, but Juve are holding out for a permanent [transfer] for a fee of around £40million, which could be a bit too expensive for Everton.”

Juventus‘ £40m assessment of Luiz’s value won’t have just put Everton off the prospect of signing him permanently this summer, with few clubs keen to stump up such a fee for the out-of-favour midfielder.
Everton have already been told to pay a fee of between £45–50m for Southampton’s Tyler Dibling, and it remains to be seen which area of his team David Moyes will prioritise amid a frustrating transfer window.
Moyes and Everton are in a race against time to develop a squad for their Premier League opener, and with Juventus playing hard-ball on Luiz’s valuation, it’s unlikely the Toffees will want to waste more time on the potential of signing him.
