Rangers are already exploring the market for a replacement for Russell Martin after responding to protests from supporters.

Martin is still under massive pressure at Ibrox, despite picking up his first win in six games across all competitions, beating Hibernian 2-0 in the League Cup last weekend.

It has been an abysmal start to the season for Rangers, who sit a lowly 11th in the Scottish Premiership with five games played.

After just four months in charge, Martin could already be heading for the door, which would be the Scottish giants’ third sacking of 2025.

Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Pittodrie between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes that Rangers are reviewing candidates to replace Martin, despite the fact he is still currently in his role.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted that the Gers have been pushed into looking at new managerial options by the recent protests at Ibrox.

Supporters caused a momentary pause in the Glasgow side’s win over Hibernian, launching bouncy balls onto the pitch to vent their anger at Martin.

Wyness added that Rangers should be looking at new managers every day of the year anyway, so they have contingency plans in place.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “It’s normal, but it should be happening every day of the year.

You should be looking at new candidates in every area.

I’d be looking down the lower leagues and see who was coming up.

I’d be looking at European situations, seeing who was doing well.

I don’t think that’s the way Rangers have been.

The pressure is building that way.”

On Tuesday (23 September), Football Insider exclusively revealed that Martin’s Rangers future hinges on results before the international break.

The Glasgow giants have four games before the international break in two weeks time, facing Genk and Sturm Graz in the Europa League, as well as Livingston and Falkirk in the Scottish Premiership.

Sources say that these next four games are key for Martin’s future, and he could be dismissed if the negative results continue.

The board remains hopeful that he can turn their dismal early-season form, but are prepared to take action if necessary.
