Everton have had a positive start to the Premier League season but ex-CEO Keith Wyness has delivered a new criticism of the club.

David Moyes’ side drew 0-0 with Aston Villa on Saturday (13 September), off the back of two impressive wins against first Brighton and then Wolves

Manchester City loanee Jack Grealish and new signing Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall have been the standout players so far for the Toffees.

Grealish in particular looks to be returning to somewhere near his best, after a number of years performing below par under Pep Guardiola.

However, Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – still has one criticism of his old side’s work in the transfer market.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted that Everton were too slow getting things in place for the recent transfer window, and still have some key positions that need to be filled.

The Toffees are particularly short in the full-back area, and midfielder James Garner has been forced to fill in on a number of occasions this season.

However, Wyness added that there is a positive feeling around the club currently, with no financial worries and a new stadium to enjoy.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “I’ve still been a little bit critical about the time it took them to get people in place and things in place ready for this transfer window.

I think they left things too late, and I think there are still some key positions that need to be filled even at this stage.

“So I think they’ve been slow on that, but apart from that, you can’t fault them in terms of the backing and the situation financially for the club.

“Everton right now is feeling very positive given the start to the season, the new stadium, Moyes, and Grealish.

It’s a feel-good club at the moment, with no financial worries.

“It shows it can turn around, if you’re allowed to do things properly with good people.”

Meanwhile, Football Insider have exclusively revealed that David Weir is close to rejoining Everton after reigniting talks to join their recruitment team.

Brighton announced on 12 September that Weir is leaving his post of technical director after seven years at the club.

Weir came close to returning to Everton earlier this year before negotiations fell through.

Now, a deal is back on the table, and there is a growing expectation that a full agreement can be reached between the club and the transfer guru.
