Cristian Romero celebrated his new contract at Tottenham Hotspur with a win and a clean sheet on their return to the Champions League.
Tottenham fans were left delight at the “absolutely huge” news that Romero had committed his future to the club, penning a new deal until 2029 to close the door on speculation linking him with a move away.
Romero has said that he “loves” Tottenham and wants to stay in North London for the forseeable, and the Argentina centre-back was appointed as the club’s new captain after Son Heung-min‘s departure.
Thomas Frank has already leaned on his skipper to help seal clean sheets in Premier League wins over Burnley, Man City and West Ham, and Tottenham‘s defence also proved impregnable in their Champions League opener against Villarreal.

Spurs’ return to the Champions League after two seasons away saw Frank and several of his players make their first appearances in the competition, with Romero providing plenty of experience at the back.
Romero’s partner Micky van de Ven was tipped to have a huge impact on his Champions League debut and played his part in a 1-0 victory, but the Tottenham defender was lucky not to be shown a red card.
After Luiz Junior’s early own goal gifted Spurs the three-points and his fellow centre-back avoided being dismissed, Romero posted on Instagram with a rallying cry for Tottenham fans and team-mates alike.

Kevin Danso came on as a late substitute to help Tottenham see out the win and reacted with two ‘starry eyes’ emojis to Romero’s message, which said: “Great night for all of us, back competing where we love.
“Strong start, but this is a long and we have to keep working and improving.
Big thanks to all the fans for the incredible support today.
Always together”.

Football Insider Verdict
Spurs’ plethora of young players stood up to be counted against Villarreal, with Lucas Bergvall‘s cross from the right-hand side squirming through Luiz Junior’s hands for their eventual winner on four minutes.
Bergvall and Pape Sarr were singled out alongside Joao Palhinha as Spurs saw out a difficult game which was ultimately decided in a midfield battle, with Romero and Van de Ven also keeping the visitors at bay.
Romero is now one of the longest-serving players in a Tottenham squad unrecognisable to the one he arrived in under Nuno Espirito Santo, and the Argentine must be ready to lead from both the back and the front in this transformational period.
