Manchester City’s legendary midfielder Kevin De Bruyne concluded his decade-long Etihad career on Sunday after an emotional farewell on Wednesday night.
De Bruyne’s final home appearance for Manchester City against Bournemouth on Tuesday was a poignant affair.
The 33-year-old, who has contributed 108 goals and 177 assists in 418 appearances, was substituted to a standing ovation after teammate Mateo Kovacic’s red card forced a tactical reshuffle.
Post-match, the club unveiled plans to immortalise him with a statue alongside Sergio Agüero and David Silva, a gesture De Bruyne called “humbling
Speculation about De Bruyne’s next move intensified when Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio reported Liverpool had tabled an offer to sign the midfielder on a free transfer
However, the rumour was quickly dismissed by trusted Liverpool sources!
The Athletic’s James Pearce bluntly stated, “There’s been no offer from Liverpool.”
But Adding fuel to the fire, Mohamed Salah quipped during a Sky Sports interview last week: “We have a space for him at Liverpool?
He’s done a phenomenal job at City, and I wish him the best”.
The remark, though lighthearted, sparked debate among fans, with some recalling James Milner’s successful transition from City to Liverpool in 2015.
De Bruyne would need to accept a substantial reduction in wages to make a move to Merseyside.
He reportedly earns approximately £400,000 per week at Manchester City—a figure well above Liverpool’s pay structure.
The club has recently renewed the contracts of Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk, both of whom are now Liverpool’s highest earners.
However, the Telegraph has now come out to report that the Belgian has ruled out a move to a Premier League club – Liverpool or otherwise.
Mike McGrath reports:
“Kevin De Bruyne has ruled out joining a Premier League rival following his Manchester City departure – and will sign for a foreign club next season.”
“De Bruyne has been open-minded about his next club after it was confirmed he would leave City after 10 years, but he is now poised to leave the country which has been his home for the last decade.”
“It means he will not be facing Pep Guardiola, who cried during De Bruyne’s address to fans, or his old team-mates next season.”
