Commercial revenue rose by £34m to £188m and match revenue by £3.5m to £84m while nine new commercial deals were struck.

When Liverpool released their financial statements for the 2018/19 period back in February they were seen as a triumph.

But while those stories may act as a warning, Professor Shibli doesn't see Liverpool and the rest of the Premier League being adversely affected.

The healthy finances showed that the aims of Fenway Sports Group to keep the Reds a force on the pitch under boss Jurgen Klopp were aligned with FSG's desire to ensure a robust financial business to prop up that success.

United's accounts saw revenue fall near on 20 per cent, down from £627.1m to £509m while the club's net debt under the unpopular Glazer ownership soared 132.9 per cent from £203.6m to £474.1m, their accounts showing a £23.2m loss for the financial year with a £70m hit directly attributed to COVID-19.

After a period that saw phenomenal success on the field, including a Champions League title, the Reds' balance sheet was in rude health showing a pre-tax profit of £42m and a rise in turnover of £78m to £533m.

However, the £41m deal for Diogo Jota will see Liverpool pay only a fraction of that cost to Wolves initially, the deal spread over time, something that will be reflected in the year end accounts.
