Kieran Trippier is more likely to leave Newcastle United on a free transfer next year rather than making a move before the current window closes.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson explained that the Magpies are keen to keep the 34-year-old at St James’ Park for one more season.

Trippier has one year remaining on his current contract and no talks have been held about a renewal, although it has been suggested he could play his way into a new deal.

Robinson told Football Insider on 17 August that Newcastle are likely to reject offers for Trippier this summer as he remains a key player for Eddie Howe.

The boss remains keen to keep his vice captain in the North East beyond this summer given his prominent role both in the starting XI and the dressing room.

Ahead of their return to the Champions League, Howe values Trippier’s experience and know-how as a vital asset to their possible success.

The right-back’s future has been the subject of plenty of speculation for over a year at St James’ Park, with Saudi Pro League and Turkish teams also linked with moves.

Former Man United chief scout told Football Insider during the mid-season window that Trippier remains keen to stay at Newcastle and had snubbed Galatasaray.

Now, Robinson has explained that the Magpies are prepared to let the former England international leave on a free, although he could still extend his stay.

“It’s hardly worth them selling him,” he told Football Insider.

“Given the value he has in a Champions League side, what he brings to the dressing room and what he brings on the pitch, you’re going to have to pay a lot more than that to replace a player like Kieran Trippier.

“It’s a no-brainer to hold on to him for another year, and if he then leaves on a free, so be it.

“The finances add up because they’re playing in the Champions League.

“If they can be convinced to hand him a new deal if things go well this year, it would make a lot more sense to keep hold of him than let him go now.”

While speculation about potential sales continues to rumble on at Newcastle, they are also making efforts to improve Howe’s options in the transfer market.

Football Insider revealed on 17 August that Newcastle want to sign Leicester’s Bilal El Khannouss alongside their deal for Aston Villa’s Jacob Ramsey.

Howe is planning a busy end to the window as he aims to strengthen his squad ahead of their return to Champions League football, with multiple targets on their radar.

This comes after Brown told Football Insider that Newcastle and Leeds are interested in El Khannouss late in the window should he become available.
