Jurgen Klopp admits Liverpool need ‘a crisis’ from their title rivals to stand a chance of winning the Premier League.

Wednesday’s defeat to Everton left Klopp’s side trailing Arsenal at the summit by three points while champions Manchester City have two games in hand.

The Reds’ failure to keep pace with the current leaders threatens to see their bid to send off the outgoing manager with a strong finale in growing jeopardy.

And Klopp concedes that Anfield’s fate is now dependent on potential missteps by their two challengers in addition to their return to winning ways.

He said: “I can’t say now that we are still fully in it.

“We need a crisis at Man City and Arsenal and we need to win football games because if they start losing all their games and we do what we did tonight then nothing changes.

“We are not safe in the Champions League [qualification] as well so we should just play better football. That would be really good.”

The Goodison Park humbling is Liverpool’s first behind enemy lines since October 2010 and Klopp apologised to fans for his role in the two-goal loss.

“Obviously not the most inspired performance of all times. I really feel for the people, I am really sorry for that,” he added.

“We never lost here before and that feels really different. I really apologise for that. It was absolutely unnecessary but it happened.

“Now we have to recover because the quickest of all turnarounds is waiting for us (at West Ham on Saturday).

“I can imagine it will be a challenge, mentally and physically.”
