Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has delivered an injury update on defender Joel Matip, revealing he has trained for the first time since suffering a setback.

However, Klopp has said that the 6ft 5in [Transfermarkt] colossus has completed his first training session ahead of the clash against Brighton on Saturday.

“Matip trained yesterday for the first time with the team but we will have to see.

Klopp has had to resort to using Fabinho – who usually operates as a midfielder – as a makeshft centre-back amid the injury crisis, and while he has done relatively well in an unfamiliar position, the manager would much rather have the likes of Matip fit and ready to play.

Matip is getting closer to a return – much to the delight of Klopp.

Klopp is undergoing a bit of a defensive crisis at the moment – Lovren, Gomez and Matip are currently out – but the fact that Matip has trained for the first time since the injury is definitely a step in the right direction.

The 27-year-old has been sidelined since December after fracturing his collarbone in the 1-0 win over Napoli in the Champions League on 11 December, and it was suggested that he would be ruled out for six weeks following the injury.
