Jurgen Klopp believes the cost of Florian Wirtz’s move to Liverpool is ‘insane’.
Wirtz joined the Premier League champions last week in a deal worth an initial £100 million which could rise to a British transfer record of £116M.
Manchester City and Bayern Munich had been in the race for the Germany international before his expected price tag prompted their withdrawals.
But while Klopp, who left Anfield last summer after nine years at the helm, admits Wirtz is an exceptional talent, he was taken aback by the valuation.
“No question, it’s an insane sum,” he told Welt am Sonntag:.
“But [it’s] one that a player at Liverpool doesn’t have to keep in mind if things don’t go well for two or three games.
“We all agree that we’re talking about a great player here.
That’s just the way the market is.
“My part of football will always be the game itself, but if you want to play at the top level, you can’t train all the players yourself.
“You have to find other players as well.
That might not be to everyone’s liking.
“In English football, what sometimes happens in the transfer market has no impact on people’s emotionality or sense of belonging, of being part of the whole
“It’s also true that a transfer like this doesn’t happen every day.”
He added: “Yes (Wirtz will put his stamp on Liverpool), although of course I don’t know exactly which position Arne has Florian in mind.
“He’s an outstanding player who can give any club something great.
Whether he’ll make the reigning English champions even better remains to be seen.”
