Manchester United have taken opposing approaches to Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo’s futures in this summer’s transfer window
Garnacho‘s public fall-out with Ruben Amorim in the wake of Man United‘s Europa League final defeat to Tottenham resulted in the Argentina star being placed in the ‘bomb squad’, alongside four other players.
Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Antony and Tyrell Malacia joined Garnacho in being ostracised from the first-team setup by Ruben Amorim, but Mainoo was also marked for an exit due to his lack of game-time.
After Mainoo asked to leave the club on loan in search of regular minutes, Football Insider revealed that Man United would only sanction a move if another midfielder arrived, and that stance has now changed.
Fabrizio Romano reported via X on deadline day that from United’s perspective, the “case is closed” on the chances of Mainoo leaving on loan, a stark contrast to their position on Garnacho’s immediate future.
Mainoo may be staying put at Old Trafford beyond the end of this summer’s window, but Garnacho was finally allowed to leave Man United and completed his £40million transfer to Chelsea on 30 August.

Football Insider revealed on Friday that Man United “weren’t happy” with Garnacho’s fee falling so low after demanding over £50m from Chelsea earlier in the window, but the Red Devils did finally relent.
Garnacho’s departure was always on the cards after his relationship with Amorim deteriorated beyond repair, but the 21-year-old had no ill feeling towards Man United in an emotional message on Instagram.
The Argentina international’s post on Monday said: “Dear Manchester.
Every time I wore the badge, I gave everything I had.
“I leave proud of what we achieved together and excited for what’s to come.
Wishing the club nothing but success for the future, while I look forward to giving my all in the next chapter of my career”.
Mainoo was one of several United players to respond, and said; “All the best bro”, as he prepares for what could be another difficult season at Old Trafford.

Football Insider Verdict
Football Insider revealed on Sunday that Man United’s recruitment team were “working overtime” to move unwanted players off the books before the end of the window, with less than two hours to go.
Sancho, Malacia and Rasmus Hojlund are the three remaining names at the Old Trafford exit door, but time is fast running out for the Red Devils to save face and complete workable departures for the trio.
Aston Villa may be on the brink of signing Sancho on a season-long loan, but with Hojlund and Malacia still in the building as the clock ticks down, the disposal of Amorim’s ‘bomb squad’ is proving easier said than done.
