Kobbie Mainoo’s future has taken a fresh twist at Old Trafford following strong links with an exit for the Man United academy product.

The 20-year-old midfielder finally broke into the first-team set-up during the 2023/24 campaign, notching five goals and an assist in 32 appearances, but that was all under Erik ten Hag.

With Ruben Amorim bringing his own style of football to the Theatre of Dreams in November, Mainoo has suffered as a consequence, falling below Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte in the pecking order.

Mick Brown told Football Insider that Tottenham have considered a move for Mainoo, though speculation surrounding the young star’s future has hit a dead end over the last few weeks.

Now, the manager appears to have changed his tune ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.

According to iNews (7 August), following Mainoo’s improved physical attributes over pre-season, Amorim is understood to be impressed by the youngster’s efforts this summer.

The 20-year-old has been working hard with private coaches in an attempt to win over the manager, who took his time warming to the academy product due to concerns over his ability to run.

Football Insider verdict

Mainoo’s future will not be the only talking point at Old Trafford this summer, especially after big-money moves for Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha, and potentially Benjamin Sesko.

United appear set to beat Newcastle United to the RB Leipzig star’s signature, landing another blow on Eddie Howe’s time at St James’ Park, but it will be an incredible addition to the squad.

This, obviously, raises questions over Rasmus Hojlund’s future at Man United, who has joined the “bomb squad” alongside Tyrell Malacia, Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho, and Antony.

Amorim will be under huge pressure at Man United at the beginning of next season because, although he was only appointed in November, the Red Devils finished 15th in the Premier League table.

Losing to Tottenham in the Europa League final was also a major blow to his standing amongst the fanbase, who have become incredibly frustrated by the lack of positive performances.

Supporters would have been up in arms should Mainoo have been sold to a Premier League rival, but under Sir Jim Ratcliffe, it remains to be seen what the ownership will do with the club.
