Manchester United’s poor start to the season has been compounded by academy graduate Kobbie Mainoo’s desire to leave the club.

Mainoo has fallen out of favour with Amorim in recent weeks, and is yet to play a Premier League minute so far this season.

After not featuring in United’s 1-1 draw away at Fulham reports emerged suggesting Mainoo was pushing for a move away from the club.

The Athletic’s David Ornstein revealed on Thursday evening that Mainoo wants a loan move to secure regular first team football.

Multiple clubs have monitored the situation regarding Mainoo in recent weeks, including Man United’s Premier League rivals Chelsea as well as interest from abroad.

Dean Jones has since taken to X (formerly Twitter) to say: “Tottenham have had talks around moving for Kobbie Mainoo if the door opens to him leaving United.

“At the moment that’s not happened and some United sources believe this moment could actually spark new life into his time at Old Trafford and lead to a new contract.”

Mainoo is entering a crucial juncture in his career, having amassed two seasons of over 2,000 minutes of football, the Carrington graduate needs to be playing regular first team football.

Still in the midst of his develop, two Premier League games sat on the bench isn’t good enough for a player of Mainoo’s talents.

Furthermore, in a season that is bookended by a World Cup, Mainoo will need minutes to be able to impress England boss Thomas Tuchel.

It was Mainoo who brought balance to England’s midfield during the 2024 European Championships and the Stockport-born midfielder will be eyeing up a similar role on the world stage next summer, but he needs game time to make that happen.
