Kyle Walker believes it was 'cruel' for Burnley to lose to Liverpool on Sunday as he shared his pride in his Clarets team-mates.

The Reds needed a 95th minute penalty from Mohamed Salah to run out 1-0 victors at Turf Moor.

Liverpool registered 27 shots against the newly-promoted side, but only four of those were on target as they struggled to break down a stubborn five-man defence - only to be handed a late reprieve after Hannibal Mejbri handled a Jeremie Frimpong cross in his own box.

Having spent eight seasons with Man City before joining Burnley in the summer, Walker grew used to regularly competing with the Reds in mouth-watering top of the table clashes.

Now representing a side at the other end of the table, the England defender bemoaned the 'cut-throat' nature of the domestic top-flight as he reflected on Burnley's narrow defeat to the Premier League champions.

"Football is a cruel game sometimes," he conceded to the club website.

"I've experienced a lot of highs in this game, but this is a low - but it's a proud low, if that makes sense.

"The game plan that we'd worked on all week was delivered well for over 90 minutes and then a penalty decision goes their way - that's the way that football goes sometimes.

"The Premier League is cut-throat.

We've suffered twice now in back-to-back games.

"But we've got to look at the overall performance - we competed really well against one of the best sides in the division.

"This young group of men, supported by the experienced guys like myself, will learn from this.

"It's a learning curve and something we need to address very quickly, because that's two valuable points we've dropped now in two matches.

"The lads gave everything, absolutely everything.

This is an incredible group to be part of, on and off the pitch.

"We will regroup, dig deep and be ready for Forest next weekend."
