Liverpool are heading into a defining summer.
The right-back spot, a position the club rarely had to worry about in the past decade, is now the biggest question heading into the new season.
That’s because Trent Alexander-Arnold is leaving.
The academy graduate is out of contract this summer, and his exit has left the club needing to act fast.
While Conor Bradley is expected to play a bigger role going forward, there are still concerns.
At 21, he is talented but has struggled with injuries.
Liverpool know they can’t afford to go into a new season with just one option.
They need another name who can step in immediately?
The search has started.
According to L’Equipe, Liverpool have identified AS Monaco’s Vanderson as a possible replacement for Alexander-Arnold, who is set to join Real Madrid on a free transfer.
The report said, “They’ll be even less so as they work on a successor to Alexander-Arnold.”
“Two names have recently emerged: Jeremie Frimpong, a 24-year-old Dutchman who plays as a right-back for Bayer Leverkusen, and Vanderson, the 23-year-old Brazilian from Monaco”
The 26-year-old has confirmed his departure, ending his time at the club he’s played for since childhood.
The report adds that Real Madrid have offered €1m (£850k) to bring in Trent early for the Club World Cup, which starts on June 15, before his contract expires on June 30.
While the club is still weighing the proposal, attention has shifted to securing a new right-back.
Vanderson, 23, has spent three and a half seasons at Monaco and would be allowed to leave this summer if a reasonable offer is received.
However, with Champions League qualification secured, Monaco are not desperate to sell at any price.
The Brazilian is under contract until 2028 and was previously linked with Tottenham Hotspur.
Liverpool are also looking at Jeremie Frimpong of Bayer Leverkusen, who has a €35m (£30m) release clause that’s been described as “below market value”.
He is seen as a strong candidate due to his pace and attacking output.
The rebuild starts now.
With Alexander-Arnold on his way out, Liverpool are carefully mapping out who can help fill the gap—immediately and long term.
