La Liga club president breaks silence on FSG takeover talks

In recent weeks, speculation has intensified about FSG pursuing an ambitious expansion into Spanish football, with Getafe CF emerging as a prime target.

Reports suggested FSG, led by John Henry and advised by Michael Edwards, had zeroed in on the Madrid-based club after considering other European sides.

The rumors gained traction after Edwards returned to FSG as CEO of Football, with a clear mandate to lay the groundwork for a multi-club model similar to Manchester City’s global network.

But this week, Getafe’s president Angel Torres addressed the mounting claims directly.

Speaking to Spanish outlet COPE, Torres made it clear he has no intention of selling:

“I’ve been here for 25 years, and every year a journalist comes out saying [something]… And now it’s Liverpool.

But it’s not for sale.

It’s not been for sale since I arrived,” he stated.

His comments contrast with an earlier stance, when he suggested he could eventually step aside.

For FSG, the idea of adding Getafe to their portfolio seemed appealing.

The club has carved out a stable position in La Liga and is in the midst of major stadium renovations scheduled for completion by 2028.

While Torres’ remarks appear to shut the door on any imminent deal, FSG haven’t publicly ruled out exploring other opportunities in Spain or beyond.

A spokesperson for the group noted last month that evaluating projects across global sport remains a core part of their strategy (via Liverpool Echo):

“FSG routinely engages in conversations and evaluates opportunities across global sports, a common process to assess ventures that align with the organisation’s strategic priorities.”

For now, though, Getafe look set to continue under Torres’ leadership and any hopes of a sale to Liverpool’s owners appear firmly on hold.
