The model of car driven by Diogo Jota in his fatal crash was the subject of numerous recalls over the years, according to reports.
Jota died after being involved in a car crash in Spain in the early hours of Thursday morning.
The crash occurred on Spain’s A-52 road near Zamora
A tire blowout is said to have triggered the accident, with Jota’s car being found engulfed in flames.
The car was believed to be a Lamborghini Huracan - the model is no longer in production, but was one of the Italian manufacturer’s most successful cars.
The Huracan has faced a number of safety-related recalls over the years, according to Carscoops.com.
A tire explosion is said to have triggered the accident
In September 2024, 39 Huracan EVO Spyder vehicles were recalled in the US, with Lamborghini admitting that a crash protection bracket, which is crucial to the front structural member, may have been installed on the wrong side.
That came after Lamborghini recalled 7,805 Huracan models in November 2023 due to a function in the infotainment system which allowed drivers to adjust their headlights horizontally - a feature that is not allowed in the US due to the possibility of creating glare for oncoming traffic.
Some 2021 and 2023 Huracan Coupe and Spyder models were also recalled due to concerns that doors may fail to open properly in an emergency because of the unlatching cable’s safety clip not being secured properly during assembly.
Models built between 2021 and early 2022 were also recalled due to the possibility of the seat belt warning system and dashboard visual indicator not activating when the vehicle was traveling below 20 km/h.
Jota and his brother’s bodies have now returned to their hometown of Gondomar in Portugal, where a wake will take place on Friday, with Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro among those in attendance.
The funeral will take place on Saturday in the same town in which Jota married his long-term partner Rute just last month.
