Liverpool have provided a makeshift glimpse into how Premier League football will look once the action officially resumes later this month.

After three months without top-flight games, the stalled 2019-20 season is provisionally scheduled to restart behind closed doors on June 17, with Manchester City vs Arsenal and Aston Villa vs Sheffield United due to kick things off before a full round of fixtures takes place across the following weekend.

Liverpool require just two more wins to make sure of a first domestic league title for 30 years once matches are back under way, having boasted a mammoth 25-point lead over nearest rivals Manchester City when the campaign was suspended in mid-March.

The Reds - like all 19 other Premier League outfits - had been conducting individual activities and then small-group sessions in preparation for the sport's eventual return as part of 'Project Restart', before being permitted to resume contact training following a unanimous vote held last week.

On Monday, Liverpool shifted training from their Melwood complex to Anfield as they continue to get back up to speed for their first match of the resumption - the small matter of a Merseyside derby against Everton in which they could finally clinch the title, depending on how City fare in that aforementioned clash with Arsenal.

Jurgen Klopp was eager to test his squad - who also took a knee around the centre circle in a show of solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement - with a series of "short 11 v 11 match scenarios" on a sunny afternoon, with the players - minus midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum, who was held out with a minor knock - split into teams and donning either full home or away kit.

Such full-sided drills will have no doubt helped Klopp better assess the current readiness of his team, while playing in front of an empty stadium will have been valuable preparation for when the time comes to contest official matches without fans in attendance.

"We wanted to give the players the feeling of playing and competing without a crowd," assistant manager Pepijn Lijnders told the Liverpool website.

"We are just going step by step back to our way of playing, knowing that we have to work hard in training and be really committed to our principles to reach the same level that we had.

“Today was an important step in that direction; firstly getting familiar with the process around the games and secondly giving our squad playing time and competition very close to the environment that we will have in the future.”
