Eberechi Eze’s free-kick was right to be disallowed in Crystal Palace’s 0-0 draw with Chelsea in what may have been his final game for the club.

Eze is close to joining Tottenham from Crystal Palace, after five seasons in South London and having scored the winning goal in the FA Cup to help the Eagles clinch their first ever major trophy last season.

Arsenal were also interested in a move for Eze, though the 27-year-old looks set to join their North London rivals and boost Thomas Frank’s creative options following a long-term injury in pre-season to James Maddison.

This article contains exclusive comment from former Southampton and England striker Matt Le Tissier.

Crystal Palace begun their Premier League season with a hard-fought point at Chelsea, though it could have been all three after Eze had struck a powerful free-kick past Robert Sanchez.

However, after a VAR review, the referee denied Eze from opening the scoring due to captain Marc Guehi being within a metre of the Chelsea wall.

Guehi’s presence had opened up a gap in the wall which Eze exploited to fire home into the roof of the net.

Le Tissier believes that by the rules of the game, the goal was right to be disallowed.

“I feel a little bit sorry for Eberechi Eze it was a terrific free-kick, but the rules are the rules and the rules have changed in recent years and unfortunately the goal did have to be chalked off”, Le Tissier told Football Insider.

“VAR got it right, whether or not those rules are correct and that is a different conversation that is a different conversation all together but I do feel a little bit sorry for him because it was a cracking strike from the free-kick.”

Le Tissier was impressed by the Palace support at Stamford Bridge as the match could be Eze’s last for the Eagles.

“Wonderful that he got a standing ovation from the Palace fans when he came off as well because there is a good possibility it may be his last game for Crystal Palace and if that is the case then he’s got a nice memory to take with him.

“The fans have been appreciative of all of his efforts for the football club and rightly so, he’s a terrific player and I think Crystal Palace fans would wish him all the best if the move does happen.”

Eze’s fine free-kick would have been the perfect farewell, should it have been his fine game in Palace colours.

Palace have been quiet in the transfer window, though the club now need to take action with Guehi also a likely departure to hit Glasner’s squad.
