Liverpool supporters have been celebrating all week long after securing the Premier League title last Sunday.

The Reds have been terrific all year, defying pre-season predictions to win the league with four games to spare.

The scenes at Anfield following the final whistle against Tottenham Hotspur were unlike any witnessed over the past three-and-a-half decades.

Having been forced to celebrate behind closed doors in 2020, Liverpool fans had not seen their team win the English title in person since 1990.

When Kenny Dalglish led his team to their 18th league title that year, Leeds United were winners of the second division.

Extraordinarily, Leeds also finished top of the second tier in 2020, when Liverpool lifted the Premier League trophy in an empty Anfield.

And after the Yorkshire club confirmed themselves as Championship top dogs on Saturday, an incredible all-time record has now been tied up.

Leeds will be back in the Premier League next season after a two-year break.

Having won 2-1 at Plymouth Argyle on Saturday, they go up as Championship winners.

Daniel Farke’s team left it late at Home Park, Manor Solomon bagging in injury time to move them ahead of Burnley into first place.

But while Solomon’s winner gave Leeds fans bragging rights over the rest of the second division, it also meant that the Elland Road side have won their league during each of Liverpool’s last three title-winning campaigns.

“This is the 4th season that both Leeds United have won the 2nd tier & Liverpool have won the top-flight, after 1963-64, 1989-90, & 2019-20,” writes statistician Michael Reid on X.

“It’s now the all-time English record for most times a specific club has won the 2nd tier at the same time another also won the top-flight.”

Liverpool fans will be hoping their team can buck the trend and win the Premier League without Leeds’ help next season.

Leeds and Liverpool’s parallel league title wins are one of those quirks of history that only football can throw up.

Somehow, somewhere, the Peacocks became Liverpool’s lucky charm – and vice-versa.

Things will have to change next season, though, with Leeds upwardly mobile under Farke.

With the Championship ending on Saturday, Leeds will now take their place in the Premier League, where Burnley will join them.

The third promotion place will be decided between Sheffield United, Sunderland, Coventry and Bristol City after a topsy-turvy day left that quartet in the play-offs.

Elsewhere, Luton suffered back-to-back relegations as they joined Plymouth and Cardiff in being sent down to League One.
