Pascal Struijk's red card for his tackle on Harvey Elliott has been upheld, after Leeds' appeal against the decision was unsuccessful.

The Liverpool midfielder was left with a dislocated ankle after the challenge and underwent surgery on Tuesday.

The incident took place in the second half of Liverpool's 2-0 win over Leeds at Elland Road. Struijlk slid in from behind and hooked the ball away as Elliott was dribbling, but in doing so the Leeds man trapped the teenager's ankle under his left leg.

Elliott took to Instagram and insisted Struijk was not to blame for his injury, and that the Leeds' defender did not deserve to be sent off.

'Neither was it a red card just a freak accident but these things happen in football.

The three-game suspension means that Struijk will miss Leeds' trip to Newcastle on Friday, the Carabao Cup tie at Fulham four days later and the home clash with West Ham the following Saturday.

Elliott had impressed for Klopp's side this season before the injury, starting Liverpool's last three Premier League matches and looked set for an extended run in the side.
