Liverpool can look back on their season with nothing but pride having won an unexpected Premier League title in 2024/25.
Although they finished third in 2023/24, the Reds had been backed to drop off following the exit of legendary manager Jurgen Klopp.
That they did the exact opposite under Arne Slot is to the great credit of the Liverpool head coach and his players.
But if Liverpool were the winners of the season, then Arsenal were the objective losers.
After two consecutive second place finishes, the Gunners had been hoping to finally overcome Manchester City and win the Premier League.
Instead, while City dropped off, Liverpool sped past both.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta did not take another runners-up finish especially well, suggesting that as his team had accrued more points last season than Liverpool did in this, the Reds had simply been in the right place at the right time.
Fortunately, Alexis Mac Allister has now stepped in to set Arteta’s claims straight.

“Winning trophies is about being in the right moment in the right place,” Arteta said in early May.
“Liverpool have won the title with less points than we have in the last two seasons.
With the points of the past two season we have twoPremier League [titles].”

While Arteta was not necessarily wrong, his suggestion that Liverpool were simply lucky ignored the fact that Slot’s team had not needed to amass such a tally because of his own side’s shortcomings.
And, speaking to The Anfield Wrap in an interview released on Friday, Mac Allister had his say on those suggestions.

“We didn’t expect to win the league that easily, but it’s something nice because I think we deserved it,” said the Argentine.
“Some people said ‘oh, because of the points, you’ve done less points than Arsenal last season,’ but I think we fully deserved it and that’s why we are really happy and enjoying the last weeks already being champions.”
Mac Allister has been one of Liverpool’s most important players all season long, underlining his development since joining from Brighton in 2023.
His newfound status as one of the best midfielders in Europe has led to suggestions that Mac Allister is attracting interest from Real Madrid.

However, after receiving the ‘Embodiment of LFC’ award from The Anfield Wrap, the 26-year-old reiterated that he is happy at Liverpool.
“Without my teammates this wouldn’t be possible,” he said.
“This is a team sport and I’m not a player that will dribble past five players and score a goal, I’m not that type of player, I need my teammates and they really help me a lot.
“That’s why I’m really happy at this club because I’ve got great teammates, great people.”
