Newcastle United welcomed back Lewis Hall against Liverpool but saw several other key players struck down with injury.

Eddie Howe‘s side will head into their next match against newly-promoted Leeds without at least four of his first-choice players, following a clash in which Newcastle came up short in agonising circumstances.

The Magpies were already down to 10 men before three players were forced off in a 15-minute second-half period, and Anthony Gordon will miss three matches after his red card challenge on Virgil van Dijk.

Sandro Tonali and Joelinton’s respective injuries will leave significant gaps for Howe to fill in midfield, and Fabian Schar’s forced withdrawal with a concussion could result in a new-look defence being fielded at Elland Road.

Liverpool‘s 3-2 win on Monday came in spite of Newcastle’s 10 men outplaying them for large swathes of the second half, as Bruno Guimaraes and William Osula’s goals dragged them back level from 2-0 down.

Rio Ngumoha’s introduction and immediate impact off the bench grabbed the headlines, but Newcastle’s substitutions also gave a glimpse into what Howe’s side could look like in Saturday’s encounter at Leeds.

New signings Jacob Ramsey and Malick Thiaw both made their Newcastle debuts and Osula came on to score that 88th-minute equaliser, while Hall made his first competitive appearance since 26 February.

Football Insider Verdict

With no Gordon, Schar, Tonali or Joelinton to choose from at Elland Road, Howe will be glad to finally have reinforcements with minutes under their belts in the form of Hall, Osula, Ramsey and Thiaw.

Ramsey and Lewis Miley replaced Joelinton and Tonali after their respective injuries in Monday’s clash, and they’ll be expected to join Bruno Guimaraes in Newcastle’s midfield three, as could Hall potentially.

Osula has provided Howe with a possible answer to Gordon and the continued absence of Alexander Isak up front, but it remains to be seen if Newcastle have signed further reinforcements in time for Saturday.
