Liam Delap’s injury against Fulham has spoiled months of transfer work and led to Nicolas Jackson’s loan move being thrown into doubt.

The number nine position has seen plenty of upheaval at Stamford Bridge this summer.

Joao Pedro was signed by Chelsea from Brighton and whilst the Brazilian is more natural as a number 10, the 23-year-old thrived up front during the Blues’ Club World Cup campaign and the ensuing pre-season matches.

The arrival of the Brazil international and Delap from Ipswich this summer had made Jackson surplus to requirements.

The Senegalese striker was set to join Bayern Munich on loan after falling down to third-choice in the pecking order, whilst Christopher Nkunku has signed for AC Milan.

In a shocking twist, Chelsea have requested for Jackson’s move to Bayern Munich to be cancelled and for him to return to London, David Ornstein revealed on X.

The move was set to be a record-breaking one, with the loan fee alone costing the Bavarian giants £13million [The Independent].

And in a cruel twist of fate, Jackson will now be forced to return to London, having flown out to Germany in preparation for signing for the Bundesliga champions.

There are also unconfirmed rumours that the striker is refusing to return to Chelsea, adding to the chaos that Maresca is having to endure having already lost his starting number nine to injury.

The Blues had spent much of the summer looking for a new home for last season’s first-choice number nine, and will now need to go back to the drawing board when it comes to finding a way to fund this window’s lavish spending spree, and there will now be knock-on consequences for some of the Blues’ young stars.

Tyrique George was brought on to replace Delap in Chelsea’s 2-0 win over Fulham in the 13th minute, before being replaced in the second half by Andrey Santos in the 81st minute.

The young winger’s introduction allowed Pedro to move further forward to a number nine position and the Brazilian subsequently scored the opening goal for the Blues.

George had been linked with a move to Fulham and Crystal Palace, and Jackson’s departure, coupled with Delap’s injury seemingly opened up the opportunity for the 19-year-old to reclaim his place in Enzo Maresca’s starting line-up.

But with the West London side under pressure to balance their books after UEFA hit Chelsea with a record-breaking fine for failing to comply with their financial regulations.

As a consequence, the winger seems to have gone from a starting option to an obvious candidate to be sold in the space of an afternoon.
