Liverpool are actively pursuing a summer transfer of Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi, with growing optimism after recent developments. The 25-year-old England international has made clear he will not sign a new contract with Palace, whose chairman Steve Parish acknowledged the challenge of losing a player of Guehi’s calibre on a free transfer next summer, implying a sale is likely this window.
Following the Community Shield encounter between Liverpool and Crystal Palace on August 10, Palace's chairman hinted at concluding negotiations soon to avoid losing Guehi for nothing. Liverpool, who have tracked Guehi for months, are reportedly ready to pay up to £45 million (€52m, $60.5m) including bonuses. An agreement on a five-year contract with a one-year extension option for Guehi has already been reached between the player and Liverpool, showing strong intent from the Reds.
Other clubs, particularly Chelsea and Newcastle United, have shown limited or no interest; Chelsea have refrained from a move despite injury concerns, and Newcastle do not prioritize central defence this summer. Liverpool thus appear as the clear favorites to secure Guehi's transfer before the window closes.
In addition to Guehi, Liverpool are monitoring other defensive prospects like Italian teenager Giovanni Leoni from Parma. However, Liverpool's priority remains Guehi, as they consider Leoni a fallback option if Guehi’s transfer falters. Leoni is also targeted by AC Milan and Inter Milan, and time is critical for Liverpool to finalize their decision.
Meanwhile, Liverpool continue to seek other reinforcements in attack and defence, including persistent interest in Newcastle striker Alexander Isak, whose departure seems unlikely this window due to Newcastle’s stance.
Overall, Liverpool’s transfer strategy this summer is focused on strengthening their defence with Guehi as the primary target, backed by Palace chairman’s admission that a deal is imminent to avoid free departure next year.
