When Alexis Mac Allister was asked which player he would like to see Liverpool sign this summer, few would have predicted the answer to be a defender who finished 17th in the league this season.
"Oh, Cuti (Romero)," Mac Allister told TNT Sport, when asked to choose one player he’d like Liverpool to add to its roster.
The Spurs man played an integral role in his country’s three international successes between 2021 and 2024, featuring in all seven games at the World Cup in Qatar.
It’s not just Mac Allister who feels Romero is an outstanding talent; so does the man considered by many to be world soccer’s greatest-ever player.
Alexis Mac Allister wants Liverpool to sign Cristiano Romero
In 2023, following a World Cup qualifier against Ecuador in which Romero was voted player of the match, Lionel Messi claimed the center-back was the “best defender in the world”
He would likely cost a significant fee to prise from the London club, and while Liverpool was in the market for Dean Huijsen earlier this summer, center-back does not seem to be a priority position.
Virgil van Dijk has committed his future to the Reds, Ibrahima Konate was one of the league’s most consistent defenders this season, and Joe Gomez and Jarell Quansah are reliable deputies.
Should either leave, the picture could change, but for now, no matter how many sympathizers Romero has, don’t expect to see him in a red shirt soon.
