'Little bit of a feel': Gary Neville says Liverpool youngster now reminds him of Premier League legend

Ryan Gravenberch has been one of the stories of the season for Liverpool, with the midfielder’s rise a key reason behind the Reds’ success.

The Netherlands international went from a bit-part player under Jurgen Klopp to an undroppable member of Arne Slot’s system, with Gravenberch forming an incredible partnership in the midfield alongside Alexis Mac Allister.

With Gravenberch winning praise from a former Bayern Munich director, the 23-year-old talent’s rise in the last nine months at Liverpool has been nothing short of extraordinary, with the youngster now considered one of the best midfielders in the Premier League.

And Gary Neville had to stop himself short in directly comparing Gravenberch to one of the Premier League’s greatest-ever midfielders.

Speaking on Sky Sports, the former Manchester United captain noted how Gravenberch had ‘a little bit of a feel’ to a young Patrick Vieira, with Neville naming the Liverpool midfielder as the most improved player of the Premier League season.

Jamie Carragher also likened Gravenberch to Vieira earlier on in the season, with Slot managing to get a tune out of the former Ajax midfielder having joined in 2023 from Bayern where the youngster’s first year at Liverpool was somewhat underwhelming.

Yet any fear that Gravenberch was a waste of money has now been completely dissolved, with the Liverpool dynamo now an essential part to Slot’s plan at Anfield going forward, having found the dream role for the midfielder.

And Neville has been impressed with what he’s seen from Gravenberch, with the pundit saying: “I’m not going to put him in the same category as a young Patrick Vieira, but he has a little bit of a feel about him in terms of how he plays.”

It wasn’t just Neville who was full of praise for Gravenberch after last night’s match against Brighton & Hove Albion, with Carragher joining in on lauding the Liverpool midfielder and naming the youngster the most improved Premier League player this season.

Carragher said when asked about Gravenberch’s transformation this season under Slot: “Probably the biggest surprise this season is not just him as a player, because a lot of players have an average first season and they grow in the second.

“But he’s playing a completely different role, a holding midfield position that Liverpool have been trying to sign someone in for about two or three seasons.

I don’t see anyone taking his role, I think he’s nailed that position as Liverpool’s No 6.”
