Ruben Amorim may quickly find himself regretting his choices in the summer transfer market for a struggling Man United side.
Senne Lammens snubbed a move to Aston Villa in favour of a move to Old Trafford, joining Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo, Diego Leon, and Matheus Cunha before the transfer window slammed shut.
Despite spending over £200million on transfers this summer, the main focus for the Red Devils was potential exits, including Amorim’s “bomb squad”, the likes of Marcus Rashford, Antony, and Jadon Sancho.
Rashford joined Barcelona on a season-long loan, while Sancho arrived at Villa Park on transfer deadline day, and Antony sealed a permanent move to Real Betis.
Man United fans wanted Andre Onana to leave following a series of errors in between the sticks, with Lammens and Aston Villa‘s Emi Martinez seen as the possible replacements.
It was the first of the two who signed across the dotted line on transfer deadline day, providing plenty of challenge for Onana and Altay Bayindir for the 2025/26 campaign ahead.

Mark Ogden, an award-winning journalist, is uncertain that choosing the 23-year-old Belgian over Martinez was the correct choice, as Amorim seeks a consistent No.1.

“They were playing a strange game with the goalkeepers.
It looked like Emi Martinez was on his way to Man United, but they preferred Lammens,” he said on ESPN (3 September).
“I’m kind of surprised by that because, for me, Martinez is what they need right now.
They need someone with a strength of character, personality, and world-class ability to sort out the defence and add confidence.
“They believe that Lammens is the better bet, and that the cost of getting Martinez on a short-term loan was too high in terms of wages, so they went with Lammens.
I think they could live to regret that.”
Lammens, while extremely exciting, is relatively unproven at a high level, having only made 64 first-team appearances for Royal Antwerp after arriving as a free transfer in June 2023.
It is a huge step up for the goalkeeper, who was involved in the last Belgium squad, but failed to make his international debut in games against North Macedonia and Wales.
However, with Onana and Bayindir failing to state their case as United’s first-choice goalkeeper, Amorim looks willing to give the youngster a chance once the Premier League season resumes.
Lammens has made just one appearance in the Champions League, coming during the 2023/24 campaign, but he was hardly ever going to turn down a dream move to Old Trafford.
