Liverpool kicks off the 2025/26 campaign today at Wembley as it takes on Crystal Palace in the Community Shield.

The annual curtain-raiser sees the 2024/25 Premier League champions take on the FA Cup winners for the chance to lift the first piece of silverware this season.

With just five days to go until the new league campaign gets underway at Anfield against Bournemouth, Liverpool will be aiming to send an early message to its rivals as it aims to defend its title.

Arne Slot will likely name his strongest team after what has been a busy summer for the Reds, with the likes of Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong all eyeing up their competitive debuts for their new side.

And there will of course be the usual suspects from last season, including the likes of Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah, with fans hoping they can celebrate another trophy at Wembley today.

Yet more Wembley heartbreak for Liverpool under Arne Slot.

They'll have to get over this one quickly before the new Premier League season gets underway on Friday against Bournemouth.

The players are currently making their way up the steps at Wembley to receive their runner-up medals - a walk no player wants to do.

Full-time

Indeed it is, with the game finishing 2-2.

We're going to a penalty shootout.

James Findlater

Palace chance

Devenny strikes from the edge of the box, and his effort just goes wide.

That is probably the last effort of normal time...

James Findlater

Palace substitution

Marc Guehi leaves the field as he's replaced by Justin Devenny.

The Palace captain has been struggling over the last few minutes, hard to tell whether it was just cramp or something a bit more serious.

James Findlater

Yellow card

Salah goes into the book for pulling back Eze as the Palace man looked to break

James Findlater

Substitutions

Florian Wirtz makes way for Harvey Elliott, while Andy Robertson replaces Milos Kerkez

Around 8 minutes remaining - we'll be going straight to penalties if we're still level at full-time

Nothing the midfielder could have done with his arm there, and VAR agrees as it waves away the shouts.

Drinks break

The players take another break, and it looks like Liverpool is preparing a couple of changes, with Alexis Mac Allister and Wataru Endo getting ready to come on

James Findlater

Chance

Great chance for Wirtz as it opens up for him on the edge of the box, but he skies his effort well over the bar.

James Findlater

Save!

Good save from Alisson to deny Eze at his near post after a slack pass from Szoboszlai played Liverpool into danger

James Findlater

Palace chance

Guehi's cross is flicked on by Mateta into the path of Sarr, who can't turn the ball home with the goal at his mercy.

Reckon he would have been offside in any case, although it's another warning for Liverpool

James Findlater

Chance!

Lovely move from Liverpool sees Wirtz slide the ball across to Ekitike in the penalty area, with the striker firing over.

The Frenchman could easily have a hat-trick already, but he has been superb so far.

James Findlater

Chance!

Great chance as Kerkez floats the ball up to Ekitike, who gets his header horribly wrong as he sends it well wide.

Great chance for number three for Liverpool
