“Liverpool Are Backing Themselves…” – Paul Gorst On Chase For Marc Guehi

Arne Slot rightfully garnered praise for his achievements in his debut season as Liverpool head coach, landing the Premier League title at the first attempt.

Much was made of his ability to improve the squad he inherited from Jürgen Klopp, with ‘control’ becoming a major theme throughout the campaign.

Just two games into the new season, that control seems to have deserted Slot’s side, who have conceded twice in both fixtures.

Following the departure of Jarell Quansah early in July, fans and pundits alike have been calling for the addition of a quality centre-back, with Crystal Palace’s Marc Guéhi strongly linked with a move to Anfield.

Steve Parish has made it clear that they will listen to offers.

“I think the feeling is that they’re probably asking for a little bit too much at the moment, certainly from the Liverpool end, given the contract status.

Liverpool know that he wants to join, so they can get him next year for nothing.

“Liverpool are backing themselves to the point where they think Palace will have to blink and bring their asking price down.

“I think they feel relaxed enough to maybe get to later in the window and then say to Palace, ‘£30 million still on the table, what do you say?” And then, if not, they’ll get him next summer for nothing.

“I don’t foresee any issues on that front, if it does get that far, but I guess it’s just Liverpool just running the clock down and just waiting to see if Palace eventually blink, and they’re forced to maybe reduce that asking price by 5 or £10 million.”

REDMEN REACTS

With the ongoing Alexander Isak saga dominating the back pages and provoking furious reactions on Tyneside, it is important that Liverpool’s other rumoured summer-long pursuit does not become an afterthought for the club transfer committee.

A player available at the level of Marc Guéhi represents about the best the market has to offer without breaking the bank, and going into the season without him could be a major gamble.
